Everything we do, in whatever situation, in any moment, we are always thinking, feeling and doing. These three things are always connected and consistent with how our brains work.
From childhood, we develop hundreds of attitudes about the world around us most based on our experience and what we are thought by peers and adults. Our attitudes , play an vital role in how we think, how we react to things emotionally and how we then act.
Obviously, attitudes play a fundamental role in our level of emotional intelligence thus impact our performance.Lets look at the case scenario below:
When J was young, she loved reading, drawing , painting especially she was interested in Chinese Literature and that she could write beautiful stories, poems . However, her parents advised her not to waste her time pursing Chinese Literature and art she might not be successful in future and it is better to focus on scientific subjects such as mathematics. computers , etc. As a result, she developed an unconscious attitude that “I am not creative”.
Later, she graduated in IT and became IT executive in one multinational firm . When she was asked to come up with a creative & innovative approach to streamline the IT operation. She was triggered by her unconscious negative attitude about her creativity. She started to feel “irritated, frustrated” then she started thinking, “why me, I can’t do it, it is not my job , these emotions disturbed her for 1 whole week, in the end she failed to come up with any new approaches.
What if , J has positive attitude towards creativity? What will be the outcome? Positive attitude could trigger positive emotions such as excitement, interest to explore more …. We can definitely imagine she could come up with a new approach for her assignment.
